On Saturday, January 17, 2015, citizens of Asheville and Buncombe County will celebrate our community’s 34th annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Prayer Breakfast at the Crowne Plaza Resort on Resort Drive in West Asheville. We thank everyone for the invaluable support our community has given to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Association in past years, and we cordially invite you to join us once again as we celebrate our nation’s progress and forcefully face the obstacles to Dr. King’s dream that still confront us.
Our keynote speaker his year will be Rodney Johnson, Executive Director of the Office of Parent Services at George Washington University in the nation’s capital. Rodney began his career as a football star at Asheville High School and Mars Hill College, where, after graduation, he became assistant football coach. After a stint coaching basketball at Boston University, he joined the staff at George Washington University in 1985, first as a coach, then as Director of Parent Services.
Through his work every day, Dr. Johnson strives to bring our society ever closer to fulfilling the ideals and philosophy espoused by Dr. King. His outreach and support of families—both students and parents—at GWU reflects both his own values of the importance of family, and Dr. King’s support for education at all levels.
